GOOD ALL ROUND EFFORT GIVES GIVE WMCC MIDWEEK ELITE XI A HANDSOME VICTORY.

Reddin the skipper won the toss again and decided to bat first. Original plans to open with Fawcett and Peggy were wrecked as both showed up late. One had a troublesome horse who did not want to wear the loafers it was being forced to wear and the other because…. Well, because it was Peggy and he was unable to get himself changed in the required10 minutes.

Pippy was ushered up the order to open and quickly ushered off the park bowled second ball. Farah Fawcett then came out to join Dame Nelly after a slow start with some accurate bowling from the Stock bowler and Side Show Bob lookalike eventually got things moving. Skipper had to drag Nelly off on 50 as the skippers had agreed retirements on 50. Fawcett was eventually out for 23 caught. Good effort my Matt who played an unselfish innings ticking the scoreboard along supporting the more prolific Nelly. With no other batsman making double fingers WMCC finished on 111 for 6.

Opening the bowling were the spin combination of Peggy and Woodrow. The pair only went for 28 together for 2 wickets each. An inspirational piece of captaincy! David Huett made his midweek debut and bowled and exacting spell. His first delivery was topped to the keeper who tried his utmost to drop getting his legs tangled up. This was followed by a very nice in swinger to take middle stump. Then came on Magic Johnson and yes we saw some magic too. With lots out swing he began to tease the opposition who only managed to go for 10 runs and he took 2 wickets. One caught behind which only the keeper knew was edged. The sporting batsman popped his bat under his arm and took the decision for the umpire.

The final wicket was taken by Pippa who bowled at the rabbit at 11 who played all round a straight one. Stock finished on a 62 all out which meant WMCC won by 48 runs.

A good effort all round.

Bat: 50no Nelly, 23 Farah

Ball: 2 wickets each Woodrow, Magic, Peggy, Woodrow,

Field: 2 catches Reddin, 2 Peggy, 1 Farah – Run out Farah/Reddin.

Next week Vice Captain Fawcett will be leading the troops. Available to him please and not me.

Mid-week cricket:

I hear some people moaning about batting orders, selection etc. If you have problem please feel free to talk to me. My aim is to try and give everyone a game. You might bat at 1 one week and the following you could be 11. Some weeks bowlers will not get a bowl but might bat top of the order. When I make selection the criteria I use are

Paid up members get priority. Why should a paid up player miss-out when a non member gets a game?

Ensure I have enough bowling.

Ensure I have some batting

Pick players who requested specific games. We have some players who live near away fixtures but can not get to homes games by 6pm.

People actually letting me know they can play.

I will not pick players who owe match fees either. If you play and then tell me after the game you have no money then it is your responsibility to settle your depts. It does not have to be me. You can pay any captain.

I am trying to be fare to all and at the same get a team out that competes. If you are not happy then please let me know. I will make mistakes. There are things in the club which I am not happy with now and in the past and I make these known in right way through the chair and respected captain. But once a club decision is made I accept it.

19th May, 2009 – home against Purleigh

Reddin won the toss and decided to bat 1st. Good start by A. Smith with a quick 14 which included 3 fours before he missed a straight one to be bowled. Reddin topped scored with 25 before limping off with ‘another’ hamstring pull. The "retired" Brock danced down the wicket to hit one glorious four. He enjoyed it so much he tried it again – Stumped. Barrett was left on 15 not out. Final score was probably a bit short on 97 and we probably needed another 25. There were actually 2 maidens bowled which is not what we want in this form of the game. But, in saying that the batting was not easy with the uneven bounce, the ball stopping and some good bowling by the Purleigh opening pair.

Hayman was given the ‘new ball’ (well actually an old ball I found in the box) and was probably the pick of the bowlers with two wickets. The first was an excellent catch at extra cover by Scott. The other was the wicket of Chris Collis who kindly offered to play for Purleigh who were one short. I managed to negotiate a loan deal where they have the big man for the rest of the season and we get two cases of pork scratching. As this was such a good deal I have not gone through the committee. For the record Chris was Bowled middle stump for 9 - we shall not miss him. The other wickets to fall were 1 to Peggy Mitchell caught behind and 1 to Magic Johnson bowled. There was also a run out where the batsman skied the ball towards Andy Smith who charged in to drop the catch, gathered and threw in a nice low one bounce delivery for Barrett the keeper to complete an excellent run out.

Boreham C.C. v Woodham Mortimer C.C.

WMCC won the toss and decided to bat on green top. In our fifteen eight-ball overs we reached 133 for 7 with only Simon Barrett making a decent score. Simon scored 73 with 12 fours and 6. He received some company from John Scott, Geoff Reddin and Connor Hayman. Simon made a difficult batting look very easy.

BCC batting were never really in the hunt with Wells taking a wicket in the second over, an excellent catch diving forward from Fawcett and square leg. Supported by Russell Barnard who bowled a good line and length and taking two wickets. Both the batsmen walked back to pavilion with ducks to their names. One was caught by Reddin behind the timbers and the second by Scott with the ball dropping from skies. Also there was a wicket each for Jared Payne and Connor Hayman. Connor was unlucky not to pick up a couple more. Woodrow was brought on to produce some trickery and took a catch of his own bowling as well as a smart stumping from Reddin (it was similar to a Warne / Gilchrist dismissal). The innings ended in the dark with BCC on 102 for 8. A Woodham victory of 21 runs.

Special mention to Russell and Connor who bowled very well and Barrett with bat.

Next game is the 13th at Witham. Let me know if available. It is up to you :-)
