ReserveTeam Reports

WMCC Reserves get off to a winning start.
With Captain Reddin not eligible David Wells stood in as captain.

Bowling first the Coggeshall A made 112 all out.

C. Hayman 3-0-32-1
C. Marshall 2-0-35-0
Wells 3-1-9-2
J. Marshall 3-0-33-2

Chasing WMCC made a win slightly more difficult for themselves with the batsmen trying to hit the back wall instead of using nudge and nurdle tactics. The score was made with an over spare in and an 11 over match with the calmness of a returning Graham and Craig.

Mason Run Out 6
Hirst Not Out 41
J. Marshall Caught 15
Wells Bowled 1
C. Hayman Run Out 17
C. Marshall Not Out 19
113 for 4
Win by 2 wickets and 11 points gained.
Man of the Match: Wells for his brilliant bowling figures in a game where everyone else went for over 30.

Champagne moment was a catch of his only bowling by John Marshall. Probably catch of the season in the clubs first game!

BDICL report (Woodies go into the final!!!!!)
With one Division Five team dispatched, it was left to Boreham Reserves to try and represent the division in the Final, but it was not to be as they were defeated by Woodham Mortimer Reserves by six wickets. That may sound a wide margin, but it was a much closer contest than the score line may project. Boreham Reserves were dismissed for 51, with Connor Hayman taking 3-11, and stand-in wicketkeeper Simon Barrett taking four victims. Boreham Reserves then contained Woodham Mortimer Reserves very well, but they could not dismiss Graham Hirst, whose retirement with 25, as good as sealed their fate. Ian Ball and Andy Smith carefully seeing them through to 52-0 with four balls remaining.

WMCC Reserves v Margaretting
Margaretting 100 all out, WMCC 92 all out
Bowling: Andy Smith 3 overs 2 for 25, Graham Hirst 3 overs 1 for 31, Steve Collis 3 overs 2 for 18, Neil Friend 2 overs for 25.
Batting: C Collis 6, I Ball 6, G Hirst 30, A Smith 13, N Friend 6, S Collis 14.

Woodham reserves make history and go into the reserve team cup semi final. Braintree Reserves went out of the competition despite not actually losing the contest, but were knocked out because Woodham Mortimer Reserves lost one less wicket. Simon Barrett had strike for the final over, and two were required for the win, and one for the tie, yet it took until the final delivery for the ball to finally hit a wall. A run out was completed at the non-strikers end, but that only reduced the margin to one wicket instead of two.

Woodham were made to fight for the game after dismissing Braintree Res for 78. Braintree fielded well with some great catches, including one off the ceiling from Steve which was a one in twenty chance!!, but WMCC made it through just!!

Woodham Mortimer Res. Win by 82 runs
The first ever meeting between Woodham Mortimer Reserves and Woodham Mortimer III, and the latter's first ever match in this competition. It ended in a comfortable win for the Reserves, who after losing seven matches in a row, now have won two back to back. Ten games now for Woodham Mortimer III's and ten defeats.

A win at last, and a stand in skipper as well!! Although the reserves have not played badly in most games this season, through one reason or another we haven't quite got over the winning line. But not this time!!

Woodham batted first. Andy Smith and skipper Chris opened with Andy departing for 7. Graham Hirst joined Chris and the score raced along with both retiring. Debutant for this season Nigel Richardson was out for a quick 6, followed by flash who was out in a flash!! Matt Fawcett made three before the returning Hirst and Collis C went on there merry way again. Chris was run out for a brilliant 54 so Graham batted out the last couple of overs for 34 not out, well played guys. WMCC 107 for 5

Andy and Steve opened the bowling with two overs a piece and kept things tight, with Andy Smith taking the first wicket. Graham joined in and took two wickets for next to nothing. After this the woodies really went to work, putting the Helions batsmen under a lot of pressure with great fielding and catching. Matt Fawcett kept things really tight behind the stumps. The run rate began to climb and WMCC had now taken five wickets. But we had to wait a while for the last wicket as the Helions number six put up a good fight. Helions Bumpstead Res 93 all out.

The main reason that a team does not appear in the list above is that until late Saturday, due to illness, it was by no means certain that the reserves would field a team. My thanks go out to Connor, who was originally selected but travel was proving a problem, and Dan for filling in at the last minute - thanks guys. With key players like Andy Smith & Graham Hirst going down with a bug, Chris not well at all at the end of last week and the skipper under the weather thanks has to go to the two people who starred in an otherewise predictable one sided game, Connor and Mark Beames. Connor is a real hand full with the ball and batsmen don't like facing him. He bowled three overs for not many, as did John Woodrow with three overs for eighteen. Woodham due to the lack of a fourth bowler went for 167, with Mark Beames making his debute with the ball. We were short of at least one bowler and the skipper holds his hand up to losing the plot!!! But in my defense i didn't feel good but didn't want to let my reserve team down by not turning out, apologies!!!

In reply John Woodrow soon departed leaving Steve and Mark to try and put some respectability on the score sheet. Steve was out for a hard fought 21 and Mark retired on a brilliant 25. Players came and went with Chris getting into double figures before the returning Mark batted out the last balls of the last over. Ever player that has played for the reserves has given his all, but we are in a higher league with a better standard of opposition and have had some players learning the indoor game in division four, which is not ideal. Thanks to Connors mum for driving Connor to the game, thats devotion to the cause for you!!! Steve

Bowling: C Hayman 3 overs for 23, J Woodrow 3 overs 1 for 18, S Collis 3 overs for 48, D Karcocki 1 over for 20, M Beames 2 overs for 58 = 167 for 2
Batting: J Woodrow 1, S Collis 21, M Beames 25 not out, C Collis 17, C Hayman 0, D Karcocki 0 not out = 72 for 4

Stats for Earls Colne game:
Batting: A Smith 3, G Hirst 27 not out, S Barret 20, M Fawcett 18 not out, S Collis 0, C Collis 10 not out. Total 89 for 3
Bowling: A Smith 2 overs for 30, S Collis 3 overs 1 maiden for 20, G Hirst 2.3 overs for 19, S Barret 2 overs 1 for 17
Catches: A Smith 1
Earls Colne 93 for 2
Good batting by Graham was not enough to get us to a defendable target. Simon was ring rusty and Matt fought hard for his 18 but the total was never enough against a good batting and bowling team. Thats about all the words i can summon up after this one!!!

Stats for High Garrett game:
Batting: S Richardson 7, C Collis 8, M Beames 25 Not Out, C Hyman 10, S Collis 36 Not Out, A Smith 10 Not Out
Bowling: A Smith 3 overs 2 for 22, C Hayman 3 overs 1 for 20, S Richardson 2 overs 0 for 15, S Collis 2.2 overs 0 for 16.
Catches: S Richardson 1

Great knocks by Mark Beames, Steve Collis and a cameo by the late arriving Andy Smith took WMCC to 93 for 3, or so we thought!!! After a very indifferent start we would have settled for this total, even though it was no where near enough. It never occured to any of us that we may have been short changed scoring wise. But this would appear to be the case looking at the score sheet.

Again the bowling was good and made the opposition fight for what should have been an easy totally to achieve. Another 20 runs would have made this a winning total, and we may well have score twenty more!!! Not a good end to a frustrating afternoon that makes you wonder why you bother!!! Steve

Stats for Margareting match: WMCC 69 for 5 off 11.1 overs. Margareting 70 for 3 off 10 overs
Batting: A Smith 9, S Richardson 17, C Collis 18, C Hyman 0, S Collis 8
Bowling: A Smith 3 overs 1 for 12, C Hayman 3 overs 0 for 22, S Richardson 2 overs 1 for 22, S Collis 2 overs 1 for 8.
Catches: S Richardson 2 (one a blinder!!!), C Collis 1

After what has been one of the most difficult weeks i can remember in cricket, to see five players, after the very late news that Graham had unfortunately injured himself at home, do so well was just brilliant. After a good start batting WMCC suffered with the Notley 'sponge ball' against some good spin which left Chris and Flash trying to bat out the overs. Great to see Chris back in the runs and on form behind the stumps. Then Andy and Connors bowling was quite breathtaking and had the opposition in trouble. It also bought the best out in me, at last!!! I would like to say a big 'thank you' to Chris, Andy and Connor,as regulars, for your fantastic loyal support this week, i owe you!!! News on Graham is no break in his wrist just swelling, hopefully back in a couple of weeks.
Steve

A much improved peformance by Resrves
Andy Smith and Graham Hirst got us off to a great start with the bat, with both retiring. Reserves debutant Mark Beames then departed for 4 via a fantastic catch. Poor Mark had labelled this a six!!! Chris Collis 10, Connor with a very good 13 & the skipper 11 all made valuable contributions before the returning openers took us to 125 for 4. Andy Smith 31 not out Graham Hirst 30 not out

In reply Helions Bumpstead kept the required run rate going throughout. Connor (only his second ever game), Andy and Graham all took wickets and kept things tight. The skipper though found it hard to bowl a line and length, and suffered as a result, apologies team - must do better next time!! Helions reached the target with 1.2 overs to spare for the loss of 4 wickets. All in all though a much better performance than the first game.

Batting: A Smith 31 not out, Graham Hirst 30 not out, Mark Beames 4, Chris Collis 10, Connor Hayman 13, S Collis 11
Bowling: A Smith 3 overs 2 for 28, C Hayman 3 overs 1 for 33, S Collis 2.4 overs 0 for 39, G Hirst 2 overs 1 for 22
Catches: G Hirst 1, C Collis 2

Reserves v Coggeshall A

The skipper won the toss and a new look Reserves took to the field. The skipper fielded first because of the fact that two of the team were experiencing there first ever indoor game and i wanted them to get used to it. Try as we might and despite a brilliant catch by Dan Karcoki off the wall at square leg Coggeshall reached 144 for 5. In reply only Andy Smith scored any runs with a good 22 as wmcc were all out for 41

To come in and play your first game in Div 5 is hard enough but to try it in Div 4 was a big ask. However Graham and Pete eventually got used to the pace of the game and equited themselves really well. We are all going to find this season a challenge.

Thanks to Graham, Chris and Pete for helping me with the umpiring and scoring. Steve

Bowling: A Smith 3 overs 1 for 25, S Collis 3 overs 1 for 34, G Hirst 3 overs 1 for 33, D Karcocki 2 overs 0 for 23, P Mcbride 1 over 0 for 17

Batting: A Smith 22, C Collis 0, G Hirst 0, P Mcbride 0, S Collis 2, D Karcocki 0
Catches: D Karcocki 1, A Smith 1, C Collis 1.
